Striving for Justice and Development: Gujjar and Bakerwal Conference Srinagar

Date:

Srinagar, 22 June 2025: A meeting of the Gujjar and Bakerwal Conference was held today under the patronage of Ajaz Ahmed Khan, ex-Cabinet Minister in the Jammu and Kashmir Government.

Participants from across Jammu and Kashmir engaged in detailed deliberations regarding the issues faced by their community and discussed strategies to seek redressal within the framework of the Constitution.

It was unanimously expressed that the genuine issues of Gujjar and Bakerwal communities are deliberately ignored, and their rights under the Constitution are being denied. Overall development remains conspicuously absent; tribal funds have either been misused or lapsed, preventing benefits from reaching the most vulnerable segments. Irregularities and misconduct in the development of tribal routes, pasture lands (both summer and winter), and other essential infrastructure were highlighted as major concerns.

In the education sector, from primary to higher education, there is a pressing need for revitalization. Special attention was called to female education, where existing facilities such as hostels are managed inadequately, often by under-qualified staff.

A consensus was reached to seek feedback on all sectors affecting Gujjar and Bakerwal communities, ensuring grassroots-level participation. Every effort will be made to address our legitimate grievances and to work towards sustainable solutions.

It was also decided that all previous district committees be dissolved unanimously, paving the way for a new, conscious selection process. A comprehensive program is being initiated to establish a strong foundation for community development and progress.
participants took a pledge to carry forward the mission of serving their community with zeal and dedication, prioritizing the welfare of the community above personal interests.
